Top Daylighting: A Circadian Health and Wellness Perspective

This course illustrates how top daylighting (daylight penetration through the roof) design strategies produce positive biological responses affecting employee health and well-being. Learners will examine how exposure to “skydome dynamic daylight” throughout the workday provides all biologically relevant criteria for positive circadian system impact. This course will help identify new ways of informing stakeholders of the payback analysis for top daylighting strategies when examined through the filter of employee health.[endshort]

Learning Objectives

  • Develop a working knowledge of the human biological response to natural daylight and explore how exposure impacts behavior, workplace performance, nighttime sleep, immune response and disease.
  • Compare the difference between natural light and electric light and learn how to specify natural light in commercial buildings to maximize health benefits.
  • Expand awareness as to the physiological process of glare and discover how to minimize resulting negative impacts while providing for improved occupant stress response.
  • Discover biological preference for dynamic top daylighting strategies as compared to windows and the unique health contribution of skylights, tubular daylighting devices and modular skylight systems.
